A graveside burial service

Key points

  • Usually graveside services are shorter, especially if mourners are older or frailer.
  • The funeral plan might have specified a burial and the location. It could be a family plot or the plot will have been purchased some time previously.
  • They are more suitable for smaller gatherings unless the celebrant has a sound system and it’s allowed by the burial ground or cemetery
  • You are exposed to the elements.
A graveside burial service

My husband, also a celebrant, once officiated at a graveside service one February in North Norfolk. It was windy, and it was pouring with rain. The elderly mourners were seated by the grave, and the Funeral Director and I were tightly holding on to the umbrella over my husband and his script. Needless to say, it was a short service and everyone was soaked through!

  • You can have music, but it’s not always straightforward. I have a sound system and I’m always happy to help.
  • Religious beliefs might be a big reason for taking this option
  • There is a sense of permanence
  • Family plots can be purchased
  • There is somewhere you can visit whenever you need to, and you can tend their grave. It can be very comforting.
  • Purchasing a grave and a memorial headstone can be very expensive.
