Honouring a life after a direct cremation

Key points

  • All too often, your loved one will think that a direct cremation will save time, money and fuss. Maybe you live far away.
  • Celebrations of Life are for the living; they’re a rite of passage honouring and showing gratitude to the person. They are also a time to mourn, to acknowledge how much they meant to you and to acknowledge your grief.
  • See My Celebrant Journey to understand why I believe this is vital to our being able to grieve in a healthy way.
  • You can celebrate the person’s life as formally or informally as you would like and share the joy of them being in your lives. I’m happy to help, advise and support you.

Interment or scattering of ashes

There are now many options regarding what you can do with your loved one’s ashes. I am happy to officiate at an interment or scattering. These, either in a special location or at sea, are the main options, though many people keep the remains close to them; it’s your choice, although they might have left you with some instructions...

My husband, a lifelong cricket fan and a member at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, has asked that we scatter his remains in front of the old Parr Stand where he watched cricket as a child. He has happy memories of ‘the bridge’. I will honour his wishes.

“A funeral ceremony doesn’t have to be limited to a funeral parlour and a graveyard anymore. We see every ceremony as a celebration of human life, and that should be celebrated, however you feel it should be.”
